Moon Phases Explained: The Synodic Month and the Vedic Tithi
Moon phases are one angle: the Sun-Moon separation. Why the cycle runs 29.5 days, the Moon laps the stars in 27.3, and the tithi slices it into 30.
Every moon phase is the same simple measurement: the angle between the Sun and the Moon as seen from Earth. Western astrology reads that cycle as eight named phases; the Vedic calendar slices the identical cycle into thirty lunar days called tithis, and still schedules the festivals of a billion people with them. Same sky, two rulers laid against it. Here are the moon phases explained from the geometry up.
Moon phases explained in one number
The Moon makes no light of its own, and at any moment exactly half of it is lit by the Sun. What changes through the month is how much of that lit half happens to face Earth, and that is set by a single number: the elongation, the angular distance between Sun and Moon in our sky.
At 0 degrees the Moon sits between Earth and Sun, its lit side turned away from us: new moon. At 90 degrees we see half the lit hemisphere: first quarter. At 180 degrees the Moon stands opposite the Sun and shows its whole day side: full moon. At 270 degrees, last quarter. Everything in between is a crescent or a gibbous, waxing while the angle grows and waning while it shrinks. Each of the eight named phases carries its own traditional reading, but astronomically they are just mileposts on one rotating angle.
Does Earth's shadow cause moon phases?
No, and this is the most common misconception about the Moon. Earth's shadow touches the Moon only during a lunar eclipse, which requires a full moon crossing near one of the lunar nodes, a lineup that happens only a few times a year. An ordinary crescent is not the Moon dipped in shadow; it is the Moon showing us mostly its night side. The dark part of a crescent moon is simply lunar night, the same as the dark half of Earth at any moment.
Two months in one Moon: synodic vs sidereal
The Moon orbits Earth in 27.32 days measured against the stars: the sidereal month. Yet new moon to new moon takes 29.53 days: the synodic month. The gap exists because Earth is moving too. During one lunar orbit, Earth travels about 27 degrees along its own path around the Sun, so the Sun's apparent position shifts, and the Moon needs roughly 2.2 extra days to catch up and realign with it. Phases follow the Sun-Moon angle, so the phase cycle runs on the longer month.
Vedic astrology tracks both clocks. The sidereal month is why there are 27 nakshatras, one for each day the Moon spends crossing the fixed stars. The synodic month belongs to the tithi.
The tithi: the Vedic lunar day
A tithi is the time the elongation takes to grow by 12 degrees, which fits exactly 30 tithis into one synodic month. The waxing fifteen form the bright fortnight, shukla paksha, ending at full moon (purnima); the waning fifteen form the dark fortnight, krishna paksha, ending at new moon (amavasya). Because the Moon's speed varies along its elliptical orbit, a tithi lasts anywhere from about 20 to 27 hours, so lunar days drift against clock days. That drift is why Diwali, fixed to the new-moon tithi of Kartika, and Holi, fixed to the full-moon tithi of Phalguna, wander across the Gregorian calendar every year.
The tithi is one of the five limbs of the panchanga, the traditional Hindu almanac, and Vedic astrologers also read the tithi you were born under as a marker of temperament. Both traditions, Western and Vedic, use the cycle the same practical way: lunation practice treats the new moon as the start line, the waxing half as building, the full moon as culmination, and the waning half as clearing.
