What Is a Supermoon? The Astronomy Behind a Close Full Moon
A supermoon is a full moon near lunar perigee, up to 14% larger and 30% brighter than one at apogee, and hardly noticeable without a side-by-side comparison.
What is a supermoon: a full moon that happens to fall near perigee, the closest point in the Moon's elliptical orbit around Earth. The Moon's distance swings between about 356,500 km at perigee and 406,700 km at apogee, a roughly 12 percent range, and when the full moon lines up with the close end of that range it looks up to about 14 percent larger and 30 percent brighter than a full moon at apogee. Nothing about the Moon itself changes. Only the distance does.
Where the Term "Supermoon" Comes From
Astronomers had a name for this decades before the public did: perigee-syzygy, the Moon at its closest point (perigee) lined up with the Sun and Earth (syzygy). It never had a chance against the word an astrologer coined instead. Richard Nolle, writing in 1979, proposed "supermoon" as shorthand for the same alignment and tied it to claims of heightened tidal and geological stress. Astronomers resisted the term for years, preferring their own clinical label, but "supermoon" was simply easier to say and the media adopted it wholesale. It is now the standard public term for an event astronomers describe more precisely and less memorably.
Why Supermoons Look Dramatic in Photos and Subtle in Person
A 14 percent difference in apparent diameter is real but small, well below what most people can detect without a side-by-side comparison. Photographs exaggerate it further: a telephoto lens compresses distance and makes the Moon look enormous next to foreground objects like buildings or trees, an effect of the lens, not the supermoon. The famous "the Moon looks huge on the horizon" experience happens at every full moon, close or far, and is a perceptual effect called the Moon illusion, not a measurable change in size. Stand two full moons next to each other, one at perigee and one at apogee, and the difference is obvious. Look at either one alone on a given night, and most people cannot tell.
The Real Physical Effect: Tides, Not Vibes
Tidal force scales with the inverse cube of distance, so a 12 percent closer Moon pulls meaningfully harder on Earth's oceans than the numbers for apparent size would suggest. When perigee coincides closely with a new or full moon, the result is a proxigean spring tide, sometimes called a king tide: measurably higher high tides and lower low tides than an ordinary spring tide produces. This is the one effect of a supermoon with a direct physical mechanism behind it, and it is the reason coastal flood advisories sometimes cite the Moon's distance directly.
What Astrologers Read Into a Close Full Moon
Classical astrology never treated lunar distance as a factor; Nolle's framing is a modern addition, not an inherited technique. Where it has taken hold, astrologers generally read a supermoon as an intensified version of whatever that full moon's phase already signifies, treating the closer distance as turning up the volume on release, culmination, or whatever theme the sign and aspects of that particular full moon carry, rather than introducing a new meaning of its own.
Is a Supermoon Actually Noticeable?
Only with a direct comparison. On its own, in the sky, a supermoon looks like a normal full moon to nearly everyone, and the size difference that does exist is easy to confuse with the Moon illusion, which has nothing to do with distance at all. What is measurable without any comparison is the tide, and increasingly, the emphasis astrologers place on that particular full moon's other placements.
Whether a given full moon squares or trines something in a natal chart matters more astrologically than how close the Moon happens to be that night, and a natal chart shows today's transits against it directly.
